BEMCSC History

Our Vision, Our Mission, Our Impact

BEMCSC HISTORY

The Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina was founded in 1877, by a group of black men who came together to enhance the quality of life in their churches and to provide a means of bringing Churches together on a statewide basis to address the educational needs of African Americans of all ages. Dr. Isaac P. Brockenton, organized the Macedonia Baptist Church, Darlington, S.C. under his leadership as pastor and served as the second Moderator of the Historic Gethsemane Association; was the first President of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention. The Convention of South Carolina (“BEMCSC”) is the largest organization of African Americans in the state.

The Convention is a vital Baptist denomination with an estimated membership of 1,100 Baptist Churches and 230,000 individual members across the state of South Carolina. Convention Departments include:
• South Carolina Congress of Christian Education
• South Carolina Baptist Brotherhood Brotherhood
• Women’s Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina
• Ushers Department
• Music Department

The convention continues to assist citizens in over-coming issues related, but limited to, educational opportunities, society participation, economic empowerment and development, and the realization of universal human rights.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life by glorifying Jesus Christ and addressing the needs of the church.

OUR OBJECTIVES

The basic objectives and corporate purposes of this voluntary global fellowship are as follows:
• to unite all South Carolina Missionary Baptist Churches, Associations, and Unions in Christian evangelism so as to fulfill the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Biblical preaching and teaching;
• to actively support home and foreign mission efforts;
• to enable and encourage Christian education; and
• to engage in any other endeavors deemed genuine and suitable to advance the cause of Jesus Christ throughout the world.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to motivate our churches to become engaged in addressing needs in our communities. In doing so we will save, strengthen, and sustain the church.
